We loaded up the Escape and got ready for our next journey. I have to say that this was probably my third favorite thing that we have ever done on a trip. Tibet and sleeping on the Great Wall of China are still my favorites, but this was close. When I think back to the first two days and having two dozen or more schooners all sailing around each other, I find that I’m just awestruck by what I saw. I would recommend this to anyone. Kim and I said that this is something we will do again. Until this time, we had been discussing several trips that would have involved a cruise on one of the large cruise ships. I think we may start looking at smaller ships from now on. Besides the experience of being on the ship, we met many new friends.
After packing up the car, we drove to Bucksport. We came across the tomb of Colonel Jonathan Buck. His tombstone clearly shows a discoloration that looks like a leg. Legend has it that he ordered an innocent woman to be burned at the stake for being a witch. She put a curse on him and said she would mark his gravestone to pay for her burning. As the fire grew hotter, her leg fell out of the fire. Her half-wit son grabbed the leg and after shouting some obscenities at Colonel Buck, ran into the woods. Not long after the tombstone was erected, this leg mark started to show. The tombstone was cleaned several times, but the mark would reappear. Well, this was all local legend and not a word of it is true, but it makes for a great story.
We arrived at the Coach Stop Inn B&B. It was a shock to have a room that we could actually walk around inside. We even had a shower that we could use anytime and as often as we wanted. The Stage Coach Inn was built in 1804, at that time it was called Halfway Tavern and served as a local tavern and stagecoach stop. It is the oldest running lodging establishment in Bar Harbor.
We went into Bar Harbor to shop. The Queen Mary 2 ocean liner was in port. I had seen a few shows about her construction. She was huge, especially after being on the schooner for several days. Dinner was at – wait for it – a brewpub. The beers were much better than the last one in Newport.
