Day 08 - Sailing Day

After breakfast, we were allowed to go into Stonington for an hour and a half. Kim wanted to get a bookmark from this 80 some year old woman who would write your name in calligraphy. When we arrived, there was a line and a rumor of a 45 minute wait. Kim decided to wait and was happy to get two of her hand painted bookmarks.

I mailed the post cards and searched for an open bar while she waited. Apparently it was too early for the bars to open, so I went into the Granite Museum instead. Stonington got its name from the granite quarries on this island. The museum was quite small, but it was an interesting way to kill 15 or so sober minutes while I waited for Kim.

We pulled up anchor and headed for Fort Point State Park. As were pulling up the anchor, several other schooners were starting to arrive. There was enough wind to make this leg of the journey under sail power. There was enough wind to get us to the park an hour ahead of schedule. We rowed into the docks and hiked up to the lighthouse. It had a bell tower. It is only one of a few still in existence with a bell still attached. There were the remains of a French and Indian War fort next to the lighthouse.
